How Hypnosis Works

Hypnosis is an extremely effective way of creating change in a relatively short period of time.  It is not in the least bit mysterious like you may have seen on television.  In fact, it is now the number one ‘tool of choice’ by neuroscientists in their studies of the brain.

Scientist who study the brain use modern functional MRI and PET scanning to observe what exactly is happening in the brain while someone is hypnotised.

The word hypnosis is derived from the Greek word hypnos, meaning sleep.  Although during hypnosis, the person is not actually asleep, it appears as though they are, because they are experiencing a deeply profound state of relaxation.  During this deep and restful state of hypnosis, brainwaves slow down to what is referred to as “alpha”, which is the state of mind we pass through before we sleep and as we wake up.  In this alpha state of mind, the subconscious mind is more open and more receptive to change.

There is law of the mind that is essential to note, quite simply: Whenever the conscious mind and subconscious mind are in conflict, you subconscious mind invariably wins!  Therefore in order to change, the conscious and subconscious mind must come together in harmony for your highest and best interest.

They hypnotic state of mind is often described as being in a trance.  You have experienced trance many times in your life.  Perhaps you’ve gone into trance while sitting in a class, taking a shower, driving on a journey,  watching television or reading a book.  You’ve zoned out, gone into a trance, forgotton your worries and you feel completely calm and peaceful.

Hypnosis is a state of mind in which a person’s conscious critical thinking mind is bypassed and communication with the subconscious mind is established.

During hypnosis when your mind is relaxed you can focus on what you want to achieve.   about allowing your mind to relax so that you can focus your attention on the particular thing you want to achieve.

My role as a hypnotherapist is to guide you into that restful and relaxing state in a easy and gentle manner.  You will feel deep relaxation of both mind and body.  You will feel pleasant, comfortable sensations that are deeply soothing to every part of your being.  Each persons hypnotic experience is uniquely individual.

In this calm and relaxing state the mind is very receptive to suggestions and this is how behaviour modification can occur.
